Nick Leahy is most noted for his role as Executive Chef at tapas style restaurant Saltyard located in South Buckhead. Since its 2013 open Saltyard has been recognized in variety of local media outlets including the AJC, Atlanta Business Chronicle, Atlanta Magazine and was recently named Best Small Plates in JEZEBEL Magazine’s Best of Atlanta April 2015 issue. Nick continues to make a name for himself in the culinary community – most recently he was named “One to Watch” in the July 2015 Restaurant Issue of The Atlantan Magazine, had a featured Gourmet Meals In Minutes cooking segment on national television network, HLN, and is the first chef to ever be appointed to Board of Trustees for Meals On Wheels Atlanta.
Prior to his work at Saltyard Leahy honed his skills working for Concentrics, Chef Chip Ulbrich and 5th Group in Atlanta. He also served as Executive Chef at Daylesford Organic in London, a restaurant and farm that solely uses its own homegrown, organic ingredients (including fruits, vegetables, dairy and cattle). This experience fueled his passion for working with small, organic, local and artisan producers. Born in Bermuda, and partially raised in Europe as a child (and recently returning from another stint abroad), Nick refers to his cooking as “globally inspired with an emphasis on using local and regional ingredients.”
“Some of my earliest food memories as a boy include eating Duck Confit in Southern France and ordering what I thought was steak, but what turned out to be my first ever steak tartar,” says Leahy. “When a huge pile of raw ground beef with all the condiments (including raw egg yolks) was delivered I polished off the entire plate and told everyone I loved it.” Nick’s passion for food and culture is apparent at Saltyard, where menu items may include Spanish-style boquerones (marinated anchovies) or burrata from Italy, to name a few. He is a true believer in the farm-to-table movement and works daily with local farmers to source the best possible ingredients. It is this combination of global fare with local ingredients that best represents Nick himself, a man with both international and southern roots.
As the first chef ever elected to the Board of Trustees for Meals on Wheels Atlanta (MOWA) Nick facilitated Farm To Table For Seniors In Need, a program enabling MOWA to purchase organic produce directly from the farmers at Peachtree Road Farmer’s Market at a discount while allowing the farmers to liquidate their leftover goods. The partnership provides MOWA seniors all the benefits of eating locally grown produce and eliminates farmer waste. When not in the restaurant, you will find Chef Nick reading, hiking, at the park with his two dogs (a basset hound named Tater and a corgi named Lily-Bean), or cooking for his wife.
