We catch up with Tom Monday, the founder of Small Batch America, for the inside track on Nashville’s scene of talented makers. First up? A list of local favorites from the founders of The Porter Flea.

The founders of Nashville’s hippest maker mart pick their favorite local small batch goods.

Named Best Artisan Market by the Nashville Scene in 2012, the Porter Flea has quickly become a highly anticipated event that connects independent makers of all sorts to thousands of Nashvillians hungry for locally made goods – including great food and drink like TruBee Honey and Fat Bottom Brewery. Their most recent event, AirCraft, was held in – wait for it – repurposed airplane hangars in East Nashville.

The founders – Jessica Maloan, Brent Elrod, and Katie Vance – put their discerning heads together and came up with this list of their favorite local small batch goods. Take it away, Team Porter Flea.


Sarah creates little puffs of magic in her handmade, artisan marshmallows.  With flavors like Chocolate Chili and Peach Basil there’s no question she knows a flavor combination when she sees it.  Recently she has teamed up with Jack White of The White Stripes and Third Man Records creating a unique only in Nashville mallow that features the flavor Black Current and Absinthe. Bang Candy’s handmade syrups can be found expertly mixed into cocktails at Nashville’s newest watering hole The Stone Fox.


Rebekah is not only a beloved Porter Flea alum but also is the pasty chef for one of Nashville’s most beloved and renowned restaurants, City House.  She bakes the most delectable treats with the freshest ingredients around.  Be sure and stop by City House and try anything and everything she has to offer that evening.


The Crema folks have deemed themselves a “coffee brewtique” and that’s certainly what they have created.  Drop in their place located right outside of downtown Nashville to purchase a bag of their roasted in house blends made special because these folks travel to the country of origin and seek out the most interesting and celebrated coffee farmers.

  Yes that’s right – southern ramen.  Nashville’s own specialty ramen maker Sarah Gavigan whips up ramen dishes that will certainly give you a taste of Japanese Country Food all the while giving you a dose of what Nashville has to offer.  Her menu includes Hot Chicken ramen featuring Nashville’s beloved claim to culinary fame, hot chicken.  Catch one of her popups at the Nashville Farmers’ Market.
